HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY
08.05. – 10.05.2020
Every year in May, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg celebrates its port anniversary with the world's greatest port festival. More than one million visitors from Germany and abroad come to the maritime event of superlatives each year. Taking place in the stunning harbour area in the heart of Hamburg, the event features vessels from around the world and one-of-a-kind performances on the Elbe River.
At the centre of the HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY are the water events on the Elbe at the landing stages, in the Oevelgönne Museum Harbour and in the HafenCity district. More than 300 vessels from all areas of maritime activity take part each year. Traditional highlights in the unique setting amid busy port operations include the Grand Arrival and Departure Parades with numerous vessels and beautiful oceangoing tall ships as well as the popular Open Ship days.
On shore, more than 200 maritime, cultural and culinary programme events guarantee plenty of fun for young and old. The "Festival Promenade" offers delightful food and entertainment. A number of stages with live acts and concerts along with special museum activities in the Speicherstadt traditional warehouse district complete the programme.
Other highlights include the international ecumenical opening service at St. Michael's Church, an electrifying fireworks display on Saturday evening that transforms the night sky over the Elbe into a sea of sparkling colour, and the presentation of the partner country's culture and way of life.
