It is both the world’s largest sailing event and northern Europe's biggest summer festival - Kieler Woche. Year after year, the sailing and festival week offers nine days packed full of world-class sports, musical highlights, high-calibre cultural events and a lot of fun for all ages.
Originating from a sailing regatta in 1882, Kieler Woche continues to showcase the full fascinating breadth of sailing today. The world's largest sailing event involves almost every size and class of boat there is. A good 4,000 participants from more than 40 nations take part in exciting competitions on the Kiel Fjord. Kieler Woche's maritime highlight is the traditional Windjammer Parade with more than 100 tall ships and sailing ships.
Yet Kiel's special nine-day week has more to offer than just world-class sailing: lots of musical and cultural highlights also await visitors at Northern Europe's biggest summer festival. Numerous music stages throughout the city will be providing the best possible entertainment with over 250 pop, rock and classical concerts. Children and adults alike will get their fill of entertainment at the Kieler-Woche-Hoftheater in Hiroshimapark. The International Market on Rathausplatz is a culinary classic. And the Spiellinie, Germany's biggest open-air cultural event for children, invites Kieler Woche's youngest fans to play, build, listen in, muck about and have lots of fun.
The Land Capital Kiel warmly welcomes you. Come along and become part of the world's largest sailing event and northern Europe's biggest summer festival: Kieler Woche!
